Overview
ChatGPT has gained global and systemic attention in 2023. It is the largest language model ever built, using deep learning to produce human-like text. Its potential uses are far-ranging, such as generating human-like conversations, content creation, writing code, and much more. Many sectors will be impacted from marketing, education, entertainment, finance, and healthcare. In healthcare, the potential uses may have global ramifications. Sophisticated generative AI systems could revolutionise virtual assistants and their interactions with patients. They could be used as a clinical decision support, for medical recordkeeping, medical translation, patient triage, mental health support, remote patient monitoring, among others. While these applications may be beneficial, they also raise risks for end users, and raise questions about the ownership of information. At the same time, there is no overarching legislative framework governing this space. Discussions are needed about harnessing the benefits of this technology while ensuring legal clarity surrounding medical liability, informed consent, and privacy. There are important questions about what guidelines should require at the development stage of generative AI so that biases are minimised in the data used to train these systems. There is also uncertainty about who owns the information generated from chatbots in the healthcare context. Detailed discussions between experts in the field can help to illuminate the path forward.
