Overview

The one-day event in November will consist of three separate activities.

Narratives in Medicine (9:00 am - 11:00 am)

- Speakers: Dr. Alan S. Weber and Dr. Mohamud A. Verjee.

- This workshop provides an overview of the importance of narratives and story-telling in medicine, including: biographical stories by doctors and nurses to guide developing trainees, self-reflective writing to improve practitioner performance, and patient stories as peer-to-peer education materials and as a window into the patient experience. The role of stories in healthcare practitioner self-care will also be explored. Examples of narratives will be analyzed in small groups along with reflective writing exercises.

- Learning objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Describe the scope and goals of the fields of Narrative Medicine; Evaluate the evidence base for improved patient outcomes using narrative medicine and interventions for: better patient education, improved doctor-patient relations, culturally sensitive healthcare, improved diagnostic accuracy, and improved follow up / home care; Assess the value of using narrative medicine in your practice and patient education programs; Evaluate a resource pack of materials for implementing narrative medicine in your clinic and for private study.

Art Therapy and Visual Arts in Medicine (1:00 pm - 5:30 pm)

- Speakers: Ms. Sara Powell, Ms. Natalia Gomez Carlier, and Ms. Sarah Roach.

- This workshop will assist in providing participants with a basic understanding on the need to develop closer communication, with medical staff and psychology professionals, in order to holistically support local patients; in turn, helping professional colleagues make informed decisions and appropriate referrals. Culturally specific intervention should eventually shape and have a guiding impact on the development and growth of the social care sector in partnership with the medical practice in Qatar as a unifying treatment and support.

- Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Discuss the basic principles and the theoretical components (evidence based research on effectiveness) of visual arts in medicine and Art Therapy; Describe how Art Therapy can be an effective treatment intervention to help patients deal with trauma and chronic illness; Explain the Art Therapy process for people experiencing chronic illness; including how the use of art materials, metaphor, and play can provide an inner resource for positively confronting an ongoing illness and ultimate psychological relief; Discuss culturally specific knowledge to better holistically support the Qatari patient and compare it to current treatment research across Arab nations; Explain framework for making appropriate referrals to Art Therapy; Describe the importance of approaching treatment from a perspective that encompasses both mind and body.

Physicians Life Writing (1:00 pm - 5:30 pm)

- Speakers: Dr. Arthur Frank, Dr. Alan S. Weber, and Dr. Mohamud  A. Verjee.

- This small master class will provide guidance for physicians to record their life experiences by writing autobiographical stories. Potential goals of story writing for participants include: memorializing important life events, providing career retrospectives, sharing valuable wisdom with others, or resolving traumatic experiences. The class is open to licensed physicians.

- Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Analyse stories about physicians; Write their own stories to explore professional and personal issues.
