Overview
The activity entitled “Management of social, emotional, cognitive and neurological disorders using evidence-based music therapy techniques” is a twelve-hours long activity that runs over 3 days. Run by an expert team of Physicians, Music therapists, Neurologist and Neuroscientist, it includes case-based discussions, lectures, simulations, small group discussions and hands-on activities using musical instruments. Participants will learn about latest discoveries of cognitive neuroscience and neurophysiology; some of the techniques presented are Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS), Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP), Melodic Intonation Therapy (MIT), Musical Speech Stimulation (MUSTIM), Rhythmic Speech Cuing (RSC), Vocal Intonation Therapy (VIT), Therapeutic Singing (TS), Oral Motor and Respiratory Exercises (OMREX), Musical Sensory Orientation Training (MSOT), Musical Neglect Training (MNT) , Musical Attention Control Training (MACT), Musical Mnemonics Training (MMT), Associative Mood and Memory Training (AMMT). At the end of this activity, participants will be able to: 1- Outline presentations and symptomatology of common social, cognitive and neurological disorders. 2- Explain the classification of sensorimotor and cognitive techniques in music therapy 3- Examine the importance of the cultural background in the effect of music on brain and emotions. 4- Outline the guideline on how to refer, plan, conduct and report a music therapy session 5- Evaluate the benefits and modalities of drumming circles in their field of practice. 6- Explain how music and music tools can help foster selfesteem and express emotions. 7- Name the evidence-based techniques that can be used to treat speech and motor deficits 8- Describe the music therapy techniques that can be used in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. 9- Evaluate the skills needed to implement the techniques presented. 10- Assess a case of autism or ADHD for music therapy 11- Describe the music therapy techniques that can be used with children with special needs in education and therapy.
