Overview
The importance of design in healthcare has long been recognized, with its impact particularly felt in patient and professional communication, usability, education, space design, and product development. However, there are multiple definitions of design and its potential uses in healthcare both globally and in Qatar. Much of the literature on design in healthcare recognizes the importance of design in a practical sense through the use of design processes and tools to create visuals, but does not explore in depth the skill set required to both develop and understand visuals. This skill set is best defined as visual literacy – the ability to identify, interpret, and communicate meanings using visual languages. This skill set has been recognized as an important factor in higher education. This introductory workshop aims to build awareness of the importance of and enhancing the level of visual literacy of the participants, ultimately improving their ability to produce visually enhanced health communication materials.

Target Audience
Specialties - Allied Health Professionals, Dentists, Educators, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physicians, Students

Overall Learning Objective
  1. Define design and visual literacy and their importance in healthcare.
  2. Identify types and use of visual elements in designed healthcare materials and use appropriate design language to critically evaluate the meaning of these.
  3. Create meaningful visuals to communicate a healthcare-related concept and assess the effectiveness of this communication.
